Why can’t people find my website?

People can’t find my website, and it’s driving me crazy!

“Why can’t people find my website?”.  This is one of the questions we are asked most frequently by clients.

It’s a simple enough question, but the answer is, well, complicated.

What are you doing to attract customers?

Like a physical shop, if you’re website is your shopfront you need to let people know its there. Having a strong understanding of your customers is critical for this type of marketing.

There are a number of things you can do to drive traffic to your website, which you can do yourself or pay a web marketing specialist to do for you.

These include activities like advertising your site with email newsletters or physical flyers, or creating content like blog posts and videos etc that can be shared on social media including Facebook, YouTube, Linked In and Instagram.

But before you do any of these things, you need to ensure your website is up to date, has great content and is optimised for search engines. Why I hear you ask? Let me tell you….

Organic search is the #1 driver of traffic to business sites

If there’s one thing that you take home from this blog, it’s that organic search is number 1 for telling people where your site is (note organic search is not a pesticide free healthy alternative, it just means that a human found your website by typing a search term into a search engine).

A study by leading search engine optimisiation company Bright Edge found that organic search is still the largest driver of traffic to business websites – on average 51% of visitors come through organic search. Compared with less than 10% through activities like social media campaigns.

So if you’re not being found through search, 1. you’re invisible, 2. your customers will find your competitors instead – bye bye customers. So what can you do?

Google meet my website, my website meet google

Three words, search engine optimisation or SEO. Sounds highly technical, and in many ways is, but in simple terms means making sure that a search engine, finds, likes and ranks your website highly. So when Mrs Smith searches for that thing you do, your website is on the first page of her results – even better – in the top 3 results.

And when we say search engine, really here you can insert Google. Google owns a whopping 94% of the search engine market share in Australia!

So how do you make Google rank your website? Google’s reputation and success is based on sending people to quality sites that meet a number of criteria, which just to shake things up a bit, Google updates on a regular basis. Simple things you can do is ensure you have high quality content that’s regularly updated, not full of dead links and works well on mobile.

However, if you’re not an expert in SEO and you want to reach more customers, it’s a good idea to bring in someone who is. We offer a range of SEO services from a once-off SEO boost through to monthly support to track your sites performance over time, enquire to find out how we can help you.

So what’s happening on my website now?

If you don’t have a google analytics account, this is a great first step to take to understanding what’s happening in your site and the behaviour of your existing customers. Google Analytics can tell you how many people are visiting your site, where they are from, how are they getting there, and if they are arriving through a search engine what keywords they use to get to your site.

But remember this is only your existing customers and is a snapshot of what’s working so far. There could be a whole new market you’re missing which is much harder to understand, this is when bringing in someone with search engine optimisation expertise can deliver real value for your business.

Is there anything else I can do?

Paid advertising is another way to attract people to your site, so you can pay for adverts that appear in Google search, or on other websites and social media your potential customers might use. However, without a good understanding of your customers and their behaviour online, advertising may not be well targeted or effective.

So why don’t people find my website? Like we said its complicated, but we can help 😊
