Get those blog posts done!
Need to get those blog posts done? Check out our tips to kick-start your blog post writing days!
Writing blog posts sounds like fun – for about the first 5 minutes when your web designer is telling you all the reasons you need to be doing it – and more importantly, the results that will eventually come of it (that’s right – I said ‘eventually’ – you have to start somewhere!).
Of course you’ve already forgotten those reasons by now too – you know it sounded important – but can’t quite put your finger on the details… Well, I’m not going to hassle you about it right now either – instead, I will give you a few quick tips on how to make this task a little easier – and get that pesky web-developer off your case!
Step 1. Target
Who’s your target audience? (Here’s a hint – hopefully you thought about this during the creation of your website – and your business!)… Usually, you want your target audience to be mildly specific – ‘men and women aged 18 to 55’ is a little broad in most instances, try narrowing it down to a 5 to 10 year age gap, gender specific depending on your field, what do your target audience want to know about?
An on a quick note – who do you specifically want to target with your current blog post? Work out who they are, and what they want to know. Then move on to step 2!
Step 2. Topic
Might seem obvious, but now that you know exactly who your target audience is and what they want to know – think of a specific topic to tell them about. Once you’ve got something in mind, think about how you’re going to word your topic – this is pretty important. You really want to pick a topic title that will make your viewers want to read your post.
Hint – if you want to write about the same topic as previous blog posts, try re-wording the title to make it sound a little different and try changing the angle of conversation – look at changing some element of the topic – whether that be part of a service you provide, looking at a different segment of your target audience and modifying the topic to suit or looking at taking a different view / perspective of that topic.
Step 3. Text
Blog posts aren’t meant to be painful. Start with a basic intro to the topic you’ve chosen. You’re not writing a thesis here – you’re simply having a conversation with your audience. So treat it like one – write down that little conversation that goes on in your head when you’re imaging how a real-life conversation would go. It’s a simple as that! Your intro doesn’t have to be long – a few sentences is perfect!
Then move on to the body of your text – again – you’re not writing an essay, you’re simply spilling the beans of some of the knowledge that’s locked up in your head – putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) for those specific people in your target audience can get an insight into a topic that interests them. Your main body of text should be a minimum of about 300 – 500 words. Easy right!
Conclusion. Get to the point – finish it off nicely. Throw in a catch phrase or deal (call-to-action) at the end – sell your service – do what you need to, just don’t sweat over it!
Step 4. Tick-box
We’ve put together a quick tick-box for you to make sure you’ve covered some of the essentials you need to do when writing your blog posts.
☐ Determine your target audience
☐ Create a catchy title
☐ Write your text in short sentences (around 10 words per sentence)
☐ Ensure your blog post is at least 300 – 500 words in length
☐ Include the title of your post in the text – if possible at least 3 times
☐ Try to include links in your blog post – links can be internal or external to other services / information.
☐ Ensure your blog posts are proof-read / edited before submission (at least for the first few until you’ve got the hang of things)
☐ Find an image that compliments your chosen topic – something to really grab peoples attention
☐ Don’t forget to sell your service at the end with a call-to-action!
Step 5. Treat
You did it – the few blog posts you write may be challenging, but you’ll soon get the hang of it and you’ll be able to do it with your eyes closed before you know it! So now it's time to treat yourself with a cuppa!
Still need some help?
Oh – did I mention the other option – if you literally DO. NOT. HAVE. TIME. To do these pesky blog posts – think about finding a good copywriter who can do it for you – Most copywriters charge per number of words. Just give them the topic and key points of interest, guide them on your target audience info and any other important requirements you might have – and whoala – regular blog posts are a breeze!
