So you’ve decided to kick start your new business and you’re ready to start reeling in the fans. Facebook Account Vs a Business Page
First let's learn the difference between having a Facebook account and a Business page - they are NOT the same thing!
Facebook accounts and business pages are two different things – the facebook account is about you – a real person. You need to sign up for a facebook account before you can create your business account. Setting up a Facebook account is pretty straight forward, simply go to Facebook, click on ‘Sign Up for Facebook’ and follow the prompts. Once you’re set up – it may take some time to find your way around, but hang in there – it gets easier!
Once you have a facebook account, you can set up a business page. Before you jump straight in, there’s a few things you should prepare yourself with first;
- A page name – something that links well with your business, preferably your actual business name, although in some cases this may not be possible. So get creative – but try to keep it simple so it’s easy for people to find you.
- Two photos – one photo will be used as you ‘profile picture’. This should be a square photo or image – usually your business’ logo. The other photo will be used as your ‘cover photo’. You can be as creative as you like with this one – it’ll be displayed quite large at the top of your page – so you can have your business services listed, a call to action, or an eye catching image that sums up what you’re all about. This image should be 820 pixels wide and 312 pixels high. (If you don’t know what that means – start with a rectangular photo / image and if it doesn’t fit nicely you can adjust it later).
- A call to action – this is something that you want your viewers to do. What do you want them to do when they go to your page?
There’s a few different ways you can get started; click on the drop-down arrow at the top far right of your screen, and click on ‘Create Page’, or if you’re already logged in to your Facebook account, click here to create a page.
Follow the prompts to set up your page and start to familiarise yourself with all the settings and functions that the page can offer you.
Build Your Audience
The next step in our facebook basics is about getting your page as visible as possible. Having a business page doesn’t mean much unless you have an audience following you. This means – you need people to click on the ‘like’ button for your page – so that they will continue to see all of the action of your page. Without these ‘likes’ – there’s not a lot of advantages to having a business page.
As with many things on Facebook – there’s more than one way to get things done. Some methods are free, others will cost you – but generally speaking, if you’ve got a good business with good products / services, then it’s going to be a worthwhile investment.
How to get more ‘likes’
Here’s the two main methods you can use to get more likes on your page.
- Invite your friends – it can be tricky to find – but look for a link on your page that says ‘Invite your friends’. Inviting your friends is the best place to start (especially if you already have lots of friends attached to your personal facebook account). Inviting all your friends also means your friends will now know that you’re getting serious about your business!
- Promote your page – click here to get started on promoting your page. It might seem overwhelming when you first get started – but tackle each section one at a time.
- Audience – create yourself a new audience targeting the demographic and interests of the people who you want to ‘like’ your page. Spend some time here creating the new audience and think hard about the job title and interests of the people you want to target.
- Budget and Duration – be sure to read this part carefully before you hit submit – you want to make sure you’re not accepting $100 per day, when what your really meant was $100 for the total promotion.
- Payment – the first time you do this you’ll need to configure your payment method.
Get Active on Your Page
Now that you’ve started building your audience, you need to give them something to look at. You need to ‘publish content’. It’s really important to publish content regularly to keep your audience engaged with your business. Some of the facebook basics things you can do include;
- Sharing photos about you and your business, your products, services, clients etc.
- Updating your audience about current trends or news / information relating to your industry.
- Promotions and special offers that you have coming up for your business.
- Promoting other peoples pages that might compliment your own.
- And from time to time – don’t be afraid to just post fun, light and easy content that has no real value – other than to give your audience something to ponder.
Once you’ve got the hang of posting content, you might decide to put a budget in place to ‘boost’ certain posts. This means you’ll be promoting that particular post to the audience you set up.
